Church of the Virgin Mary and Christ the Saviour

Churches

ABOUT

The Church of the Virgin Mary and Christ the Saviour, known locally as Panagia Livadiotissa, is a significant Byzantine church standing proudly in the centre of Roustika village in Rethymno. Its history and architecture reflect the area's rich religious and cultural heritage.

The church is two-aisled, with one aisle dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary and the other to the Transfiguration of Christ. The southern aisle, dedicated to the Virgin, is the older of the two and features frescoes dating back to 1391, while the Transfiguration aisle is more recent.

Its distinctive bell tower, marked with the date 1625, points to major renovations and additions during the 17th century. This bell tower enhances both the architectural and historical value of the church, standing as one of its most defining features.
