Church of Michael the Archangel in Monastiraki

Churches

ABOUT

In the heart of Monastiraki village, one discovers the Church of Michael the Archangel.

The church is a single-aisled, vaulted structure dating back to the early 14th century. The bell tower houses a bell engraved with the date 1601.

On the inside, the church features fragments of frescoes. The most striking fresco is the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. The composition is intricate, marked by pronounced dynamism. Above the Virgin Mary's bed, Christ holds her soul, surrounded by a grey-blue oval glory. St Paul leans over the bed, with St John the Theologian and St Peter holding a censer above the Virgin Mary's head. Other figures are depicted behind them, while four bishops surround Christ. On the left and right, eleven apostles are visible within clouds.
