Thronos: At the Foot of Psiloritis
ABOUT
Right in the heart of Rethymno, on the northwestern slopes of Mt. Psiloritis, at an altitude of 540 metres, lies the village of Thronos.
Visit and enjoy breathtaking views over the lush Amari Valley and the majestic Psiloritis mountain.
The village sits just below Throniani Kefala hill, an area of significant archaeological interest.
Today, Thronos has a modest tourist infrastructure, with a few guesthouses, a grocery store and small local shops.
At its centre stands a single-nave Byzantine church from the 11th century, dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.
The village celebrates its feast day every year on August 15.
