ABOUT

The Byzantine and Folklore Museum of Spilia houses an extensive collection of Cretan art and a collection of folk icons.

Some of the most notable examples include: a portable icon of Archangel Michael (created by Andreas Ritzos in the second half of the 15th century), a portable icon featuring the enthroned Virgin Mary holding an infant, and a portable icon depicting the Visitation from the late 16th century.

It derives its name from the cave of the same name located nearby, and it is believed that St John the Hermit resided there, contributing to the area's rich religious heritage.

The museum is open every day from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm, on Saturdays from 11:00 am to 12:00 am, and also by appointment.

Arkoudiotissa Cave (Arkoudospilios)

Arkoudiotissa Cave (Arkoudospilios)

Behold, the Arkoudiotissa Cave, where you'll encounter a bear!

But fear not, for it's merely a stalagmite fashioned in the likeness of this friendly creature!

Situated near the Gouverneto Monastery in Akrotiri, Chania, Arkoudiotissa Cave is accessible on foot from the monastery.

According to Wikipedia, this cave is thought to have been utilised for religious purposes since ancient times, with evidence of worship dedicated to Artemis and Apollo. However, during the Christian era, it was consecrated to Panagia Arkoudiotissa (Bear Virgin Mary). Ascetics also inhabited the caves in the vicinity.

Further along the path, after descending 140 metres, lies the primary church of a monastery, now abandoned. Thought to date back to the 5th or 6th century, it was established by St John the Hermit.
