ABOUT

Also known as Psiloritis, the Ida Mountain range comprises numerous peaks, with the most prominent ones being Timios Stavros (2,456 m), Agathias (2,424 m), Stolistra (2,325 m), Voulomeno (2,267 m), and Koussakas (2,209 m).

Psiloritis, steeped in mythology, is intricately linked to the birth and divine deeds of immortal gods. Nestled amidst the slopes of Mt Ida, it became a sanctuary where Rhea sought refuge from the pursuit of Cronus, concealing the Cretan-born Zeus. It was on these very slopes that the mythical goat Amalthea nurtured the future king of the twelve gods. The resounding clash of shields wielded by the Kourites masked the cries of the infant deity, destined to become the revered father of gods and humans.

Situated just above the Nida Plateau, Ideon Andron holds immense significance as the sacred cave where Zeus, born on the island of Crete, came into existence. Revered as a centre of worship for the Cretan-born Zeus, this cave is often likened to the Bethlehem of ancient times. According to ancient myth, Zeus assumed the form of a bull and traversed the Litheos River, carrying Europa to the island of Crete, eventually arriving at the ancient city of Gortys. It is within the labyrinthine pathways of Gortys that the fearsome Minotaur resided, adding to the rich tapestry of mythology surrounding the region.

King Minos appointed the formidable bronze giant known as Talos to safeguard the island of Crete against potential invaders. This mythical being became synonymous with the Talea Mountains that stretch north of Psiloritis. Indeed, the worship of Taleos Hermes was observed in the sacred cave of Gerontospilio in Melidoni. The sacred mountain, since its earliest habitation, has played a significant role in shaping the destinies of those raised amidst myths and contributing to the creation of history.

The year 2001 marked the establishment of the Natural Park of Psiloritis, a significant milestone that led to its inclusion in the prestigious UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. This global recognition has solidified the stature of this location on an international scale. Within the confines of the park, an array of enchanting hiking trails has been meticulously crafted, allowing visitors to uncover the mountain's hidden natural and geological wonders. These trails serve as gateways to explore the captivating secrets held by Psiloritis.
