Necropolis of Armeni

The layout of the cemetery seems to have been carefully pre-planned. All the tombs are rock-chiselled chamber tombs with a “dromos”, with the exception of the built “tholos tomb” no. 200.

In 1969, two pupils gave the Archaeological Museum of Rethymnon two vases they had found at a site called Prinokephalo, in the community of Armenoi. Investigation of the area proved the existence of an extensive Late Minoan cemetery. Since then, the site has been systematically excavated, and more than 220 tombs have been brought to light.

Hellenistic Bridge in Eleftherna: A Monument in One of Crete's Most Historic Sites!

Within the ancient site of Eleftherna, renowned for its historical significance, lies a plethora of important monuments. Among them stands the impressive Hellenistic bridge, sure to captivate any visitor.

According to the Ministry of Culture, the bridge is situated in the Lagas area, adjacent to the northwest of the Alfa community. It is easily found shortly after the convergence of three streams: Faragitis, the stream of Chalopota, and Nisi. The bridge lies in the southernmost part of the largest stream, flowing between Laga and Alfa.

Partially carved into the natural rock and partially constructed directly on top of the ground, the bridge stands as an impressively well-preserved structure featuring a pointed arch.

It dates back to the 2nd century BC.
