ABOUT

The municipal garden of Chania stands as a prominent landmark for the city, nestled in the heart of Chania and intricately intertwined with its historical heritage.

The Municipal Garden of Chania was a creation of Reouf Pasha, who oversaw its development. Conceived in 1870, it marked the city's inaugural public welfare initiative. Originally known as Baxe, it featured primarily evergreen tree plantings. The pathways were designed in accordance with contemporary European norms and surfaced with coarse sand.

In 1898, a structure was erected in the northwest corner of the Municipal Garden, serving multiple purposes such as a theatre, a government printing house, and a ballroom. In subsequent years, it was designated to house the Cretan Parliament.

Eleftherios Venizelos, Prince George, Nikos Kazantzakis, and Kostas Karyotakis found solace and savoured their coffee in this charming locale.

Karyotakis noted, ‘The Garden of Chania is reminiscent of the Glory of Zappeion; it is the Pride of Chania.’

Aristotle Onassis, Maria Callas, Sofia Vembo, Manos Hatzidakis, Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Katrakis, and the late Metropolitan Irenaeus are among the notable figures who have frequented Kipos (Garden) Café. Over the years, hundreds of Greek and foreign artists have also graced Kipos, bringing with them the messages of culture and art.

In 1918, the Municipal Garden of Chania underwent a reconstruction. New trees and seedlings were planted. At the entrance, a flowerbed was designed to resemble a butterfly resting on a flower, while the central flower bed was shaped like an archaic amphora (vase). Additionally, a maze with a single entrance was created in the western part of the garden, offering a serene and shaded place for leisurely exploration.

The construction of the Garden Clock in the northeast corner of the Municipal Garden, commenced in 1924. The building that continues to house Kipos Café to this day was established in 1936.
