ABOUT

Dedicated to Agios Ioannis Prodromos (St John the Forerunner) in the lower monastery (Kato Moni), and Agios Ioannis Theologos (St John the Theologian) in the rear monastery (Piso Moni), the Preveli Monastery is located in a place where the soul finds calm.

Kato Moni is believed to have housed the Megalos Potamos Monastery during Venetian times. Although the connection with Piso Moni is unclear, records from 1577 refer to the area as Agios Ioannis Theologos. The region also boasts frescoed churches from the 14th and 15th centuries. Piso Moni likely emerged in the early years of Ottoman rule in Crete.

Through continuous donations, the two monasteries were eventually united, gaining significant financial power. The monastery adopted the name Preveli, possibly in the 17th century, likely inspired by the surname of a monastery renovator.
