Art & Culture
ABOUT
Situated east of Hersonissos Port, the Lychnostatis Museum showcases various aspects of Cretan tradition and folk culture on the island.
The museum derives its name from the support structures for oil lanterns (lychnostatis, meaning such supports) that were used in the past to illuminate households.
Founded by George Markakis, an assistant professor of ophthalmology and a collector-folklorist, the museum was constructed between 1986 and 1992 through the dedicated efforts of the Markakis family and three workers. Since 2000, the Museum has been integrated into the Folklore and Educational Cultural Networks of the Ministry of Culture.
