The White Mountains
Nature & Outdoors
ABOUT
The heart of this imposing range includes the Mountain Desert, where more than fifty peaks named Sori (piles), reminding of cones, exceed the altitude of 2.000 m. Dolines, reminding of upturned cones are formed at the foot of Sori peaks. This creepy and haunting landscape is a unique geological formation in the entire northern hemisphere.
Hiking in the White Mountains requires fitness, experience and a good sense of orientation. There are several mountain shelters where mountaineers can spend their night.
The highest mountain areas are covered by snow till late June. There are numerous caves, precipices, sinkholes and canyons.
The White Mountains are home to the deepest caves in Greece.
The White Mountains host a great variety of flora and fauna species, which are exclusively endemic (stenoendemic), not to be found anywhere else –not even in other parts of Crete.

Askyfou Fortress
The Askyfou Fortress consists of two koules, small towers, strategically positioned on the Askyfou Plateau, marking a site of significant historical importance for the region.
During the Cretan Revolution of 1866, the Turks built watchtowers in different areas of the island.
At this location, you'll encounter two koules situated on separate hills, each at a short distance from the other and boasting the same height.

Askyfou War Museum
The museum was established by George A Chatzidakis, who, having experienced the horrors of war at a young age, sought to immortalise the heroic deeds of his forebears.
His vision was not only to honour their memory but also to kindle the curiosity of young generations in exploring the historical narratives of the area.
The museum's extensive collection, curated by George's son, Andreas, encompasses over 2000 artefacts from the period 1940-44, with ongoing additions that reflect the relentless and admirable efforts of the curator.

Church of Michael the Archangel in Aradena
Situated in the settlement of Aradena in Sfakia, the Church of Michael the Archangel was constructed in the early 14th century on the site of the central nave of one of the two early Christian basilicas located in the Diocese of Finiki, also known as Aradeni.
As explained by the Ministry of Culture, the Church of Michael the Archangel in Aradena stands out from other cruciform domed churches in Crete due to its architectural deviation, reflecting degenerate trends of the Greek School.
The iconographic programme within the church comprises standing saints depicted at the bottom, along with scenes from the gospel cycle, the synaxarion of the Archangels, the life of St Nicholas, and depictions of the Second Coming. The mural decoration, dating back to the early 14th century, could be attributed to the renowned painter Michael Veneris.

The Samaria Gorge provides a unique experience, and for some, crossing it is a lifelong dream come true.
While the Samaria Gorge is renowned for providing a unique and once-in-a-lifetime experience for nature enthusiasts, it also harbours spots of religious significance.
Among them is the Agios Nikolaos Church, a picturesque chapel that, although not perfectly preserved today, invokes a sense of devotion and reverence among the faithful who visit.
