ABOUT

The Historical Archive of Crete is a regional service of the General State Archives. Its main objective is to oversee, preserve, collect, classify, and index the archival material of the Chania prefecture, as well as make this archival wealth available and useful in various ways.

The Historical Archive of Crete was founded in 1920 in Chania, following a decision by the then Governor General of Crete. Its founder was the late Nikolaos Papadakis from Sitia, who was appointed as its director in March 1920.

The Historical Archive of Crete contains archival material that encompasses the entire island of Crete, hence the name of the institution. It is estimated to comprise approximately 700,000 highly significant documents dating from 1821 to the present day.

Arkoudiotissa Cave (Arkoudospilios)

Arkoudiotissa Cave (Arkoudospilios)

Behold, the Arkoudiotissa Cave, where you'll encounter a bear!

But fear not, for it's merely a stalagmite fashioned in the likeness of this friendly creature!

Situated near the Gouverneto Monastery in Akrotiri, Chania, Arkoudiotissa Cave is accessible on foot from the monastery.

According to Wikipedia, this cave is thought to have been utilised for religious purposes since ancient times, with evidence of worship dedicated to Artemis and Apollo. However, during the Christian era, it was consecrated to Panagia Arkoudiotissa (Bear Virgin Mary). Ascetics also inhabited the caves in the vicinity.

Further along the path, after descending 140 metres, lies the primary church of a monastery, now abandoned. Thought to date back to the 5th or 6th century, it was established by St John the Hermit.
