ABOUT

The Firka fortress is situated on the northwest side of the port of Chania city. Originally built by the Venetians, it served as a fortification project designed to thwart any potential threats to the port.

Internally, the space was configured into barracks and warehouses for war materials. In the centre of the courtyard, a sizable vaulted tank was constructed to collect rainwater from the roofs.

The northern side of the fortress is occupied by a complex of six consecutive domes, each housing large cannons. The design was such that the gunfire from these cannons covered the entrance of the harbour.

Throughout the Turkish occupation, the fortress served primarily as a barracks, retaining the name Firka until today. On 1st December 1913, the flag of the Union of Crete with Greece was symbolically raised on the corner turret of the fortress.

Arkoudiotissa Cave (Arkoudospilios)

Arkoudiotissa Cave (Arkoudospilios)

Behold, the Arkoudiotissa Cave, where you'll encounter a bear!

But fear not, for it's merely a stalagmite fashioned in the likeness of this friendly creature!

Situated near the Gouverneto Monastery in Akrotiri, Chania, Arkoudiotissa Cave is accessible on foot from the monastery.

According to Wikipedia, this cave is thought to have been utilised for religious purposes since ancient times, with evidence of worship dedicated to Artemis and Apollo. However, during the Christian era, it was consecrated to Panagia Arkoudiotissa (Bear Virgin Mary). Ascetics also inhabited the caves in the vicinity.

Further along the path, after descending 140 metres, lies the primary church of a monastery, now abandoned. Thought to date back to the 5th or 6th century, it was established by St John the Hermit.
