ABOUT

The Venetian Shipyards, constructed in the 16th century, stand as some of the most impressive monuments in the Old Port of Chania.

These were substantial stone structures featuring an arched façade, open to the sea to allow ships to access their interiors without hindrance. Referred to as Arsenalia, they served to fulfil the repair needs of the fleet.

These shipyards communicated with each other via arched openings in the interior walls, closed with wooden doors. Access to them was granted through a magnificent gate.

In total, 23 Venetian shipyards were constructed in the old port. However, today, seven consecutive domes, the Grand Arsenal, and two shipyards from the Moro complex in the cove of the port still stand.

Arkoudiotissa Cave (Arkoudospilios)

Arkoudiotissa Cave (Arkoudospilios)

Behold, the Arkoudiotissa Cave, where you'll encounter a bear!

But fear not, for it's merely a stalagmite fashioned in the likeness of this friendly creature!

Situated near the Gouverneto Monastery in Akrotiri, Chania, Arkoudiotissa Cave is accessible on foot from the monastery.

According to Wikipedia, this cave is thought to have been utilised for religious purposes since ancient times, with evidence of worship dedicated to Artemis and Apollo. However, during the Christian era, it was consecrated to Panagia Arkoudiotissa (Bear Virgin Mary). Ascetics also inhabited the caves in the vicinity.

Further along the path, after descending 140 metres, lies the primary church of a monastery, now abandoned. Thought to date back to the 5th or 6th century, it was established by St John the Hermit.
