ABOUT

The Municipal Garden, situated in the heart of Rethymno near the Four Martyrs Square, serves as a significant landmark for residents.

It was formerly a Turkish cemetery. When the Turks departed, the city council, as a mark of respect for the deceased, determined that the area should not be developed but instead transformed into a garden.

Today, it is adorned with lush vegetation, featuring various plants and trees, and includes amenities such as a playground, and a fountain.

It is a delightful green area ideal for recreation and sports.

Necropolis of Armeni

The layout of the cemetery seems to have been carefully pre-planned. All the tombs are rock-chiselled chamber tombs with a “dromos”, with the exception of the built “tholos tomb” no. 200.

In 1969, two pupils gave the Archaeological Museum of Rethymnon two vases they had found at a site called Prinokephalo, in the community of Armenoi. Investigation of the area proved the existence of an extensive Late Minoan cemetery. Since then, the site has been systematically excavated, and more than 220 tombs have been brought to light.

Potami Dam

Potami Dam

In the picturesque Municipality of Amari, lies the Potami Dam.

As per the Municipality of Amari, the recent construction of the dam, positioned north of the settlement of Voleones and the Patsos Gorge, has brought about a significant transformation of the landscape. The once-small enclosed valley of Potami now boasts a lake, serving as an artificial wetland. This transformation has rendered the area particularly captivating, forming a new hub for leisure and tourism activities.

From a biological perspective, the area already appears to support a substantial population of wintering birds, including endangered species like the ferruginous duck. Concurrently, the reservoir plays a crucial role in conserving a significant volume of water.
