ABOUT
The Imbros Gorge, situated in the province of Sfakia, is the second largest gorge in Crete, following the gorge of Samaria. With its picturesque landscape and wild beauty, along with a relatively moderate level of difficulty, the descent of Imbros is ideal for families with children (providing they have appropriate equipment like hiking boots).
The primary entrance of the Imbros Gorge, known as Porolago or Porofarago, is located near the village of the same name at an altitude of 700 metres. However, there are other access points near the tavernas. The gorge of Imbros boasts rich vegetation, including cypresses, kermes oak trees, maples, and more. Along its route, several caves can be found, such as Lechtarides, Perdiki, Krasa, and Gipes. In the past, the Imbros Gorge served as the only passage connecting Sfakia with the northern regions. It was a refuge for Christians and a strategic starting point for revolutions. During the revolution of Daskalogiannis in 1770, Sfakians bravely defended themselves against the Turks for two days within the gorge. Additionally, during the 1821 revolution, Greeks killed Turkish prisoners in the Imbros Gorge.
In 1867, during a tragic event, women and children sought refuge in the cave of Gipes in an attempt to save themselves. Unfortunately, the cry of a baby revealed their hiding place, leading to a devastating massacre by Omer Pasha. Later, in 1941, a German plane crashed in the gorge after being hit by a New Zealand ally.
A part of the E4 path passes through the Imbros Gorge, offering a captivating trekking experience. The most awe-inspiring section is Stenada, where the towering rocks reach a height of 300 metres, with their walls narrowing to around 1.5 metres. At the end of the route, visitors can access the road network leading to Frangokastello or Sfakia.
The Imbros Gorge stretches for 9 kilometres, and the journey through it typically takes around 2.5 hours. This breath-taking experience is accessible throughout the year, making it a delightful destination worth visiting.

The gorge of Elygia
It is one of the most remarkable gorges of Sfakia, where a few couples of wild goats still live (the seldom Cretan Chamois).
Its passage starts from the village of Agios Ioannis in Sfakia (at an altitude of 780 m and a distance of 92 km from Chania). You need around 1 hour in order to reach the location of Kormokopos, where there are caves with water, before starting descending the gorge (up to that point, you need a guide).
The gorge ends in the very beautiful piny sand beach of the Libyan Sea, after another 2 hours’ walk. From the beach to Agia Roumeli, you have to walk one more hour. The above crossing covers half the gorge. If you wish to cross all of Elygia, you need an experienced guide and at least 2 days at your disposal. You start from the plateau of Omalos and walk via the refuge of Kallergi and the summit of Melintaou (at an altitude of 2133 m) before reaching the location “Potamos” in the White Mountains.
After a vertical descent of 10 m, you reach the bottom of the gorge and walk on up to the coast of the Libyan Sea. The Omalos – Potami trek takes 6 hours and another 6 hours from there to the coast.
