Dromonero: A Petite Village with a Prolonged History
Nestled at a high altitude, Dromonero is a small, picturesque, and valorous village renowned for the Battle of Dromonero, where Cretans emerged triumphant against the Turks in 1896.
According to the Municipality of Platanias, the village earned its name, Dromonero, from the presence of a spring and a plane tree along the main road from Paleochora to Chania. The moniker translates to ‘water road’, reflecting its historic association with the spring.
To honour the lives sacrificed in the Battle of Dromonero, a monument stands tall in the village. Adjacent to the old olive mill, a contemporary art centre has been established—an innovative exhibition venue showcasing both contemporary art exhibitions and displays of local products and folk art.
