Pyrgos: A Village with a Tradition in Weaving

Pyrgos is the largest village situated at the base of the Asterousia mountain range.
In this area, you can find traditional tavernas, cafés, shops, and various accommodation options.
The name of the village is linked to the Venetian Tower constructed on top of Apano Pyrgos, the rocky and desolate hill east of the village.
The village is surrounded by three streams with seasonal torrents.
Numerous events are hosted here, including a carnival.
Here, you can explore the island's weaving art and observe looms and authentic textiles in the Centre for the Elderly and the central market of the village, respectively.
Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the hills of Kakoplagos, Kefalas, and Archontika, as well as from Kavousi, where plane and walnut trees abound.

Maridaki is located on the western side of Tsoutsouras (Tsoutsouros) Bay.
The beach is, in fact, the estuary of two surface streams that flow through two of the most beautiful gorges of Asterousia, originating from the heights of Achendrias (Achentrias).
In the area, you'll find a turquoise beach, ideal for swimming, surrounded by lush greenery, including tall plane trees and other aquatic plants.
During the summer months, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy fine meze in the tavernas of the area.
Apart from the gorges that end here, two coastal paths start from the settlement, one leading towards Tsoutsouras and the other towards Agios Nikitas. Both paths are gorgeous and easy, even for inexperienced hikers.

The village of Achendrias is known for the Cretan snake called 'Ochendria' from which it takes its name. It is a livestock village located in Asterousia.

The village is situated beneath the mountain Asfendylias, making it an ideal location for easy connections to most of South Crete, as it is not hindered by many obstacles.

The Byzantine church of Agios Demetrios is a notable attraction. In the area of Agios Nikitas, there is a palm forest, αround the village, there are many caves, including the Archontospilios at Agios Nikitas (Gialos) and Chirospilios.

Ethia, a settlement nestled among five mountain peaks, has been officially declared as a traditional village.
Thanks to the dedication of its inhabitants, the buildings have been restored, cobbled streets paved, and the village continues to thrive, overcoming the challenges posed by its remote location.
The village boasts two churches, Panagia (constructed in 1909) and Profitis Ilias, where an annual festival is held.
In 2007, a guesthouse was erected in the heart of the village in honour of the monk Evmenios from Mt Athos, who hailed from Ethia. This guesthouse serves as a hub for hikers and hosts numerous events throughout the year.
The old primary school offers a journey through history as visitors explore old photographic material, traditional Cretan costumes, and other cherished heirlooms lovingly collected and exhibited by the villagers, who treat this place like their own home.
