Vrysses: Embracing the Enchanting Square

This quaint village takes its name from a surrounding oak grove that dominates the landscape. Alternatively, though less likely, some suggest the name originates from the strong winds in the area.

A prominent feature is the village fountain, providing a refreshing spot for both residents and visitors.

During the hunting season, the slopes of the mountain attract numerous hunters, creating a scene akin to battles, as reported by the Municipality of Apokoronas.

Touristically developed, the area offers tavernas and accommodation for those seeking an extended stay to enjoy the cool surroundings. Adjacent are the renowned beaches of South Rethymno, including Preveli and Ammoudi Beach.

Drymiskos, situated in the Agios Vasilios province of Rethymno, is a quaint and picturesque village characterised by houses of traditional architecture. Nestled on the southern side of Rethymno, it graces an altitude of approximately 440 metres.

As you enter the village, a sight to behold is the enormous and age-old plane tree, boasting a history that spans more than 1000 years. Positioned nearly at the heart of a traditional square, it serves as a gathering spot for all the village inhabitants seeking respite in its shade. Just a few metres away, a stone-built fountain awaits, composed of two spouts from which a plentiful flow of clean water emerges.

Both residents and visitors can enjoy their time in the village café, conveniently situated just above the fountain and next to the square.

Exploring the village on foot, you'll be captivated by the abundant vegetation, featuring various rare plants and trees. This is one of the reasons why the inhabitants are predominantly involved in agriculture and animal husbandry.

Akoumia boasts a strategic location, in close proximity to a number of picturesque beaches. The exact founding date of the settlement remains elusive and proves challenging to ascertain.

Akoumia, in conjunction with Vrysses, is architecturally arranged in an amphitheatrical fashion at the base of Mt Siderotas, affording breath-taking views to the north encompassing Kedros and westward overlooking the Kissos valley. Additionally, it serves as a pivotal point for the main road connecting the prefecture of Rethymno to the prefecture of Heraklion, linking the city of Rethymno with Agia Galini and Messara.

The village features a bakery, lodging options, and a mini-market. Furthermore, you can savour your coffee at a café, comfortably shaded for your enjoyment.

Currently, the permanent population of Akoumia and Vrysses stands at approximately 450 residents, primarily involved in olive cultivation, animal husbandry, and tourism-related activities.
