Drymiskos: Embracing the Age-Old Plane Tree
Drymiskos, situated in the Agios Vasilios province of Rethymno, is a quaint and picturesque village characterised by houses of traditional architecture. Nestled on the southern side of Rethymno, it graces an altitude of approximately 440 metres.
As you enter the village, a sight to behold is the enormous and age-old plane tree, boasting a history that spans more than 1000 years. Positioned nearly at the heart of a traditional square, it serves as a gathering spot for all the village inhabitants seeking respite in its shade. Just a few metres away, a stone-built fountain awaits, composed of two spouts from which a plentiful flow of clean water emerges.
Both residents and visitors can enjoy their time in the village café, conveniently situated just above the fountain and next to the square.
Exploring the village on foot, you'll be captivated by the abundant vegetation, featuring various rare plants and trees. This is one of the reasons why the inhabitants are predominantly involved in agriculture and animal husbandry.

Just a short distance from Akoumia lies Vrysses (or Vryses). The square in the heart of the village was initially established in 1850, and after numerous alterations, excavations for the fountain’s spring water were undertaken in 1969, ultimately shaping the square into its present form.
The plane tree standing at the centre of the square has a history that spans about 200 years. Beneath its coveted shade in the summers, one can enjoy endless discussions, gatherings, and festivals. The source of the fountain linked to the plane tree is situated in front of the church's bell tower.

Akoumia: A Strategic Village
Akoumia boasts a strategic location, in close proximity to a number of picturesque beaches. The exact founding date of the settlement remains elusive and proves challenging to ascertain.
Akoumia, in conjunction with Vrysses, is architecturally arranged in an amphitheatrical fashion at the base of Mt Siderotas, affording breath-taking views to the north encompassing Kedros and westward overlooking the Kissos valley. Additionally, it serves as a pivotal point for the main road connecting the prefecture of Rethymno to the prefecture of Heraklion, linking the city of Rethymno with Agia Galini and Messara.
