Kato Symi: Embracing Its Formidable Wilderness
Kato Symi is situated in a lush valley, set against a landscape of formidable wilderness.
Within its expanse lies the renowned Symi forest, an extension of the Selakanos forest.
Along the village's periphery, the Blavopotamos stream meanders, flowing onwards to Faflago before reaching its culmination in the Libyan Sea.
Owing to its rugged mountainous terrain, Symi boasts numerous caves, with notable ones including Zimbraga Caves, Kissospilio, Leri Cave, Bouboulis' Cave, Rizas Cave, and Chalavra Cave.
Another significant natural landmark in Kato Symi is the Kapnisti Gorge, where, according to tradition, a colossal figure named Sarantapichos was said to have lived.
The heart of the village is found in Karavos, where a square adorned with a majestic plane tree serves as the focal point. This is where the cafés are concentrated, and much of the village life unfolds.
