Thyrathen Museum of Musical Instruments
Thyrathen Museum of Musical Instruments
ABOUT
Located just 15 kilometres from Heraklion in the historic village of Krousonas, the museum of Greek traditional music, musical instruments, research, and documentation is aptly named Thyrathen. The term ‘thyrathen education’ refers to classical education, carrying a secular character reminiscent of Byzantine education.
Situated in a renovated traditional house, where the sounds of nature nurture traditional instruments and give rise to unparalleled melodies, the visitor embarks on a journey into the enchanting music of the Mediterranean. Among the museum's goals is to introduce the local community to Greek traditional music as a whole and familiarise them with the traditional instruments of Greece and the Mediterranean.
One of the museum's aspirations is to become a cultural hub through various events and initiatives centred around traditional music. Additionally, it houses a research and documentation centre dedicated to our musical tradition. The collection of musical instruments, funded by AKOMM, is organised according to the E VON HORUBASTEL – S SAHS system, which classifies them based on the sounds produced by the respective pulsed movements of materials in aerophones, chordophones, membranophones, and idiophones.
