The exhibition titled “The Well-Traveled Dimitrios Vikelas”, organized by the Library of the Hellenic Parliament, General Directorate of Digital Governance, Library and Publications, in collaboration with the Vikelaia Municipal Library of Heraklion, opens its doors to the Heraklion public on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 19:00, at the Vikelaia Municipal Library.
This is a significant exhibition – a tribute to the life and work of the renowned intellectual. The opening ceremony will be conducted by the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis.
The scientific curation is by Dr. Maria Vlassopoulou, Head of the Benakeios Library, while the artistic direction is by Giannis Metzikof.
The exhibits take visitors on a journey through the life of Dimitrios Vikelas, from his early years, shortly after the founding of the modern Greek state, to his death in the early 20th century.
They highlight key moments in his work and life, setting the scene for his real and imagined travels across Greece and Europe, and above all, through his reading habits and writing destinations.
The exhibition traces his literary and translation output, which includes short stories, poetry, a novel, essays, lectures, memoirs, and plays.
Digital reproductions of books, photographs, newspapers, and archival documents, mainly from the collections of the Library of the Parliament and the Vikelaia Municipal Library, showcase the inquisitive mind of Dimitrios Vikelas, who deeply explored different cultures and portrayed real, everyday people in his writing.
The exhibition will run until June 30, 2026, and will be open to the public free of charge, Monday to Friday, from 08:00 to 15:00.
