Preparations are underway for the “Lake Carnival” hosted by the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos. The event is happening once again this year, proving that with the enthusiasm and involvement of locals, the carnival continues to be vibrant and full of creative energy. Over the years, it’s become a beloved tradition that brings the city together and transforms it into one big, joyful celebration.

With experience under its belt, an open theme for all participants, and even more fresh ideas, the Lake Carnival keeps evolving and growing.

At a recent meeting held on January 14th at the REX cinema, following an invitation from the Deputy Mayor of Culture, Georgia Polychronaki, community presidents, cultural associations, local organizations, sports clubs, students and residents came together for a constructive discussion on how to best prepare for this year’s event.

The carnival kicks off on February 15, 2026, in Neapoli, with performances by Cadjio Dilo – a band blending gypsy jazz and swing with the charm of old-school Greek music – and the Grypsy Swing ensemble, known for their repertoire of classic songs by iconic Greek artists.

In Agios Nikolaos, festivities begin on Friday, February 20, 2026, with the “Clown Parade” featuring student bands and stand-up comedy by students from ASTEK, popping up in key spots across the city.

On Saturday, February 21, the focus shifts to the “Hat Contest”, complete with creative hat-making workshops at the historic “Eirinodikeio” building, and an art exhibition showcasing costumes, hats, and photos from past events. The day wraps up with a party in Elounda’s main square, bringing together all the carnival groups.

Then on Sunday, February 22 at 16:00, comes the grand highlight – the main carnival parade. The route starts at Agios Nikolaos Marina, winds through the city’s main square, and ends at the iconic Lake Voulismeni.

After the parade, the band Hermaphrodite’s Child will take the stage by the lake, setting the mood with timeless hits from the 1950s and 60s, both Greek and international.

The Municipality of Agios Nikolaos actively supports the carnival and invites locals, clubs, and friend groups to form their own carnival teams. After all, participation is the key to the success of this festive, creative, and outgoing celebration.
