The exhibition titled “The Well-Travelled Dimitrios Vikelas” continues at the Vikelaia Municipal Library in Heraklion. It is organised by the Library of the Hellenic Parliament – General Directorate of Digital Governance, Library and Publications, in collaboration with the Vikelaia Municipal Library, and is hosted on the second floor of this historic institution.
This is a tribute exhibition that takes visitors on a journey through the life of Dimitrios Vikelas, a major figure of letters. It follows him from his childhood, shortly after the founding of the modern Greek state, through to his death in the early 20th century. The exhibits highlight key moments of his life and work, and evoke his real and imagined travels across Greece and Europe, focusing especially on his literary influences and writing landscapes.

Visitors can explore his work as an author and translator, including short stories, poetry, novels, studies, lectures, memoirs, and plays. Digital reproductions of books, photographs, newspapers, and archival material—mainly from the collections of the Parliament Library and the Vikelaia Library—reveal Vikelas as a restless and curious intellect, deeply engaged with different cultures, and a writer who captured real people and everyday lives in his works.
The scientific curation of the exhibition is by Dr. Maria Vlassopoulou, Head of the Benakeios Library, while the artistic direction is by Yiannis Metzikof.
It is worth noting that the exhibition was officially opened in a grand ceremony by the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, in October 2025.
The exhibition will run until 30 June 2026 and is open to the public with free admission, Monday to Friday, 08:00–15:00.
