The first exhibition featuring large-scale digital reproductions of 19 significant works from the Collection of the Heraklion Municipal Art Gallery, hosted at the Gate of Agios Georgios on the Venetian Walls, was visited by Mayor of Heraklion Alexis Kalokairinos, accompanied by Deputy Mayor for Culture Rena Papadaki-Skalidi and President of the 1st Municipal Community Theodosia Angelidakis.
Alexis Kalokairinos toured the exhibition, which presents enlarged reproductions of paintings by Haris Vailakis, Nikos Viskadourakis, Aristeidis Vlassis, Giorgos Th. Georgiadis, Nikos Georgiadis, Eleni Karagianni, Dimitrios Kokotsis, Giorgos Manousakis, Evangelos Markogiannakis, Giannis Migadis, Nikolaos Santorinaios, Takis Sideris, Vasilis Solidakis, Alekos Tsakountakis, Thomas Fanourakis and Nikos Fotakis.
It is worth noting that each reproduction features a QR Code, offering visitors direct access to the Collection.
It is recalled that the Gate of Agios Georgios was restored as part of the Cultural Development Programmatic Contract, signed by the Municipality of Heraklion, the Ministry of Culture and the Region of Crete.
The gate has been operating again with supervision since December 2025, serving as a passage that connects Eleftherias Square with Ikarou Avenue, from 08:00 to 22:00.
The Heraklion Municipal Art Gallery, within the framework of the Walls Festival, makes use of modern technology to showcase its rich visual arts Collection through temporary exhibitions of large-scale digital reproductions displayed at different indoor and outdoor locations along the Venetian Walls, beginning with the Gate of Agios Georgios.
Through the gradual placement of enlarged reproductions along walking routes and inside the gates of the Venetian Walls, an open-air gallery of high aesthetic value is created, accessible to both residents and visitors.
This initiative offers the public the opportunity to discover the Municipal Collection through extremely high-resolution reproductions, placing the viewer in a unique and privileged position in relation to the artworks.
More exhibitions within the same initiative will follow during 2026, at additional indoor and outdoor locations along the Venetian Walls, transforming a simple walk into a cultural experience.
