The Municipality of Chania is consistently moving forward with initiatives that promote accessibility and the equal participation of all citizens in public spaces. On Monday, July 7, 2025, the new Sea Trac system for autonomous sea access for people with disabilities was officially presented at Nea Chora beach, in the presence of Chania’s Mayor Panagiotis Simandirakis, Deputy Mayor for Local Economy and Development Giannis Nikiforakis, and local Paralympian and World Champion swimmer Antonis Tsapatakis.
This new, self-propelled, and technologically upgraded system, funded entirely by the municipality, allows safe and independent entry and exit from the sea for people with mobility challenges. It also offers mobility and storage features, so it can be protected from harsh weather when not in use.
Self-propelled Sea Trac systems have now been installed at:
-
Agioi Apostoloi (2 units)
-
Nea Chora (1 unit)
-
Agios Onoufrios (1 unit)
-
Marathi (1 unit)
At the same time, at Chrysi Akti, Vlite, Stavros, and Agia Marina, there are manual beach wheelchairs available, which, with the help of the beach lifeguards, ensure access to the sea for all.
