The Municipality of Sfakia announces that, in addition to the organized gorges of Samaria and Imbros, the Aradena Gorge is now officially open and accessible to the public, following essential maintenance work on its access path.

This is a unique route of outstanding natural beauty, ideal for hiking adventures and alternative tourism, blending the rugged scenery of the White Mountains with the history and traditional architecture of Aradena village.

Access from the north is possible via the old trail running along both sides of the gorge, or through the Livaniana settlement.
From the south, access is from the well-known Marmara beach. From there, visitors can:

  • Take a boat via scheduled routes to Loutro and Chora Sfakion

  • Arrange private transfers by sea or road

  • Follow the E4 European Trail west to Agia Roumeli, or east to Lykos, Phoenix, Loutro, Glyka Nera, and Chora Sfakion

Key highlights of the area include:

  • The Vardinogiannis bridge, a hotspot for bungee jumping

  • The traditional village of Aradena

  • The “Skotini” cave, located in the center of the gorge, featuring natural stalactites

The hike is of moderate difficulty and takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Hikers are advised to take appropriate self-protection measures and bring the necessary gear (suitable clothing, water, etc.).

The Municipality of Sfakia invites you to include Aradena Gorge in your itinerary and enjoy an authentic experience of Cretan nature, history, and hospitality, in one of the region’s most impressive natural treasures.
