It is known that after the Byzantines reconquered the island in 961, following its earlier capture by the Saracens in either 823 or 828, they chose Prophet Elias to establish and construct the capital of Crete. Hence, it can be confirmed with certainty that the site had hosted a settlement during the second Byzantine period.

The town actively participated in all the battles of Crete, demonstrating its unwavering presence and commitment. It also played a significant role in the National Resistance during challenging times.
