Cretaquarium has just welcomed 12 new snipefish (Macroramphosus scolopax) into its aquatic family!

With their long snouts and distinctive body shape, snipefish are among the most peculiar and captivating creatures of the deep.

Fun Facts about the Snipefish (Macroramphosus scolopax)
🐟 1. Odd shape, big personality
Its long, tube-like snout isn’t just for show—it acts like a straw, sucking tiny organisms from the sea floor.

🔄 2. It swims… upside down
Snipefish often swim head-down, a strange but eye-catching behaviour.

🌊 3. Deep-sea dweller
Found at depths of 50 to 600 metres, making it a rare sight for divers and fishermen.

👁 4. A jewel of the seabed
Its metallic pink shimmer reflects light in dazzling ways, especially under the aquarium’s lights—giving it an almost alien appearance.

🧬 5. A distant cousin of the seahorse
It belongs to the same order (Syngnathiformes) as seahorses and pipefish.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 6. A social swimmer
Snipefish tend to move in small groups, which helps them stay safer in their natural habitat.
