In 1976, Law 320/76 “On the Establishment of the Chania Cultural Centre” was published in the Government Gazette (12.05.1976). This year marks 50 years since its foundation.

With the initiative of the brothers Polychronis and Charidimos Polychronidis, and with the support of many fellow citizens, as well as local and central authorities, the construction of the Centre was completed and it began operating. To this day, it stands as one of the main pillars of culture and education in the city of Chania, hosting a wide range of activities for residents of all ages.

The 50-year milestone will be celebrated with events taking place throughout 2026.

Already, three (3) exhibitions are hosted within the premises of the Cultural Centre, open to visitors morning and evening (10:00–14:00 & 18:00–21:00), except on official holidays.

The exhibitions include:

  1. The History of the Centre’s Creation, titled “The People and the Work”, featuring material from its earliest productions. The newspaper “Chaniotika Nea” participates through its archive.
  2. An exhibition of rare book editions — including first editions, signed copies, and unique volumes — highlighting our intellectual heritage under the gaze of great figures of the world of letters. Contributors include private collectors, the Municipal Library of Chania, and the Lyceum Club of Greek Women / Chania Branch.
  3. The exhibition titled “The Covers”, showcasing designed book covers as works of art by the painter Giannis Valavanidis. This collection was first presented at the National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation from June to September 2015 under the title “The Art of the Cover”. The exhibition material was provided by Art Historian Martha-Elli Christofoglou.
