The Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency, taking into account the updated weather bulletin issued by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) for Saturday, 23 May 2026, announced that heavy rainfall and/or thunderstorms are forecast in the region.

According to the forecast, rainfall is expected to reach:

  • up to 16 mm in the Xyloskalo area
  • up to 21 mm in the Samaria area
  • up to 22 mm in the Agia Roumeli area

As these figures exceed the approved safety limits for the gorge’s operation set by the Chania Regional Unit, it has been announced that Samaria Gorge will remain closed to visitors on Saturday, 23 May 2026, from both entrances.

Throughout the summer season, visitors are strongly advised to check the weather forecast before beginning their exploration of the gorge.
