The candle was the first form of artificial lighting.
Cretan people have always had a high use of candles, closely tied to the rituals of the Orthodox faith. Whatever the occasion—wedding, baptism, funeral, memorial or religious festival—people will always light a candle upon entering the church.
Watch how a traditional candlestick is made, and then visit a small chapel, Agios Efraim, to light one yourself.
