From Vorizia to Magarikari on Foot!
ABOUT
At the southern base of Mt Psiloritis, approximately 53 kilometres from the city of Heraklion, you'll find the village of Vorizia, previously known as Voriza.
Our journey commences just on the outskirts of Vorizia, inhabited by around 500 permanent residents, who primarily make their living through livestock farming.
From the village, another path begins, leading to the Nida Plateau. As we venture out of Vorizia, along this route, we come across the Varsamonero Monastery.
Subsequently, we proceed along an unpaved road for an extended duration, before transitioning onto a moderately uphill path that culminates at the highest point of the route, at 841 metres, where the Church of Timios Stavros stands. The vista overlooking the Messara Plain and the surrounding villages is truly exceptional.
As the journey unfolds, the trail gradually descends and merges with a dirt road for the final 5 kilometres, ultimately concluding in the quaint village of Magarikari.
