Venetian Mansion De Mezzo: A Glimpse into Crete's Rich Past
ABOUT
Located in a village within the Sitia Municipality, this mansion is a striking reminder of the area's flourishing past during Venetian rule.
The region was once the fiefdom of the noble De Mezzo family, who built this grand estate as their residence. Even in its current state, the mansion's Venetian architectural features are still visible, offering a unique insight into the island's Venetian heritage.
After the Venetians were ousted, the mansion was repurposed as a residence for prominent Turkish officials, earning the name "Seraglio" during the Ottoman period.
This historical site, though weathered by time, continues to stand as a testament to Crete's layered history and multicultural influences.
