Vaulted Tomb of Kamilari: Unearthing Ancient Cretan Treasures

Histor. & Archaeological sites

ABOUT

At an altitude of approximately 80 metres, atop the Grigori Korfi Hill, located 3 kilometres north of Kamilari and west of Phaistos, lies the Minoan vaulted tomb in Kamilari.

The tomb was unearthed during the summer of 1959 as part of excavations led by the Italian professor Doro Levi. He dated this significant discovery to around 2000 BC.

Situated on the north side of the peak, the tomb offers panoramic views of the Asterousia Mountains, Psiloritis, and the plain of Messara. This location yielded significant discoveries, including a statue known as the 'Dancers from Kamilari' featuring four figures in a circle resembling a modern Cretan dance. These noteworthy findings are currently housed in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.
