Koufonisi: where magic meets history!
ABOUT
Koufonisi is located southeast of Xerokampos, painting the backdrop of the sea with its shape.
History
As noted by the Municipality of Sitia, archaeological excavations have uncovered remnants of Minoan and Roman era settlements here. It appears that the island was densely populated from ancient times until the late Roman period. This is evidenced by the large Greco-Roman theater with 1,000 seats that was excavated. According to findings, the island was a center for the collection and processing of the marine shellfish porphyra, which inhabits the surrounding seas.
