Holy Convent of Panagia Kaliviani
ABOUT
The Convent of Panagia Kaliviani in Faneromeni houses many charitable institutions.
The site of the current convent belonged to the Turk Husein Brazerzade during the Turkish occupation of Crete. On Brazerzade’s property there used to be a demolished church. An old icon featuring the Annunciation of the Holy Virgin Mary was discovered under its ruins in 1873.
The church was rebuilt and restored by the Christians who named it Panagia Kalyviani (The Virgin Mary from Kalyvia).
The small church still stands proud in the convent courtyard. The reconstruction of the new church began in 1911 and was completed in 1924. The church has a Byzantine style dome, three aisles and is dedicated to the Birth, the Annunciation and the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The old icon of the Virgin Mary can still be found in the new church.
