Chamezi: Home to Skilled Stone Sculptors

Cities & Villages

ABOUT

Being skilled in stonecraft is not only craftsmanship but also an expression of artistry.

Hence, artists are among the inhabitants of Chamezi, a charming village in Sitia.

One can visit its Folklore Museum and get to know the tradition of the place.

Near the village, at Souvlotto Mouri, you can find the remains of a renowned Minoan house.

In the vicinity of Chamezi lies the Liopetro Fortress (Leon di Pietra), likely constructed during the early years of Venetian rule on the site of an ancient acropolis. Although the fortress stands in ruin today, remnants of its formidable walls, towers, numerous vaulted cisterns, and other structures still endure. On its grounds, the Church of St John has been erected.

The vista from the hill of the fortress is truly magnificent.
