Aretiou Monastery
ABOUT
The monastery was founded in the late 16th
century by Markos Papadopoulos, who donated his property for the creation of the monastery and to meet the needs of its 12 monks.
The Major Temple (chapel reserved for prayer and other services) is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It is to be found in the central courtyard and was renovated in 1880-8. The chapel of Agios Lazaros is located within the courtyard and is believed to have a funerary purpose.
The monastery boasts workshops, food processing areas, an olive press, a wine press, ovens, warehouses and large cisterns for collecting rainwater. The stables and workshops are located around the second, southern courtyard.
