Ancient Lassaia
ABOUT
Lasaia (Lasaia or Lasos or Alas or Alassa) was a city in ancient Crete.
It is located at a distance of 2.5 km east of Kalous Limenes and is referred to in the New Testament as a city near Kalous Limenes, a place visited by Paul the Apostle. It was also one of the ports of ancient Gortynos, the capital of Crete.
The area is rich in copper deposits which were extensively mined in ancient times. The ancient pier has survived to this day. It consists of boulders placed between the shore and the small islet known as Trafos. The city cemetery has been located to the west of the islet. Today the area is being excavated.
