Stavies: A Haven for Those in Search of Tranquillity

Stavies is situated on the southern fringe of the Messara Plain.

It comprises the settlements of Agios Ioannis, Akamotos, Fournofarago, and Kapetaniana, where the renowned composer Thanos Mikroutsikos once sought sanctuary. The village takes its name from its esteemed captains, who made significant contributions to the resistance against the Turks.

It's well worth exploring, savouring delightful meze, and engaging in conversation with its welcoming residents.

A prominent feature of Stavies is the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.

At Metzolati, near the summit of Kofinas, there existed a peak sanctuary dating back to the Middle Minoan period. These sanctuaries are thought to have been utilised for rituals, as evidenced by the discovery of various figurines and votive offerings in the adjacent caves. Additionally, there stands a small church dedicated to the Holy Cross, commemorated annually on 14th September.
