A Venetian castle, perched atop a large rock south of its beach, lends its name to the settlement of Paleokastro, situated just 7 kilometres from Gazi and 8 kilometres from Heraklion.

The castle of the area, along with the Koules castle in the port of Heraklion, served as watchtowers overlooking the bay of Ammoudara.

Paleokastro features a small bay that is home to the pebbled beach of the same name.

Indulge in carefree dives, followed by a relaxing coffee at the local cafés, or opt for one of the splendid fish tavernas serving fresh dishes.

At the southern end of the beach, an old lime kiln stands prominently.
