Chametoulon of Sitia: On the Brink of Abandonment
Within the Sitia Municipality, numerous villages evoke memories of times past, before the influx of tourism. Regrettably, many of these now bear signs of neglect and abandonment.
Chametoulo(n) resides as a settlement within the Ziros District, situated on the fringes of a small plateau in a mountainous expanse at an elevation of 590 metres. It rests along the Ziros-Xerokampos road.
The village stands on the verge of abandonment, with its population dwindling. Its few inhabitants are primarily engaged in the breeding of goats.
Within its bounds stands the church of Agios Georgios, featuring an unassuming wood-carved iconostasis, alongside an ancient fountain that still provides water for the remaining inhabitants.
Located 2 kilometres away from the village, there lie the remains of a Neolithic-era settlement.
