Sfendyli: The Atlantis of Crete
Sfendyli is a village located in Hersonissos, and it is gradually being submerged and sinking beneath the waters of the Aposelemis Dam.
The village was originally constructed at an elevation of 210 metres, but it now lies within the reservoir of the dam, with only remnants visible above the water's surface. As a result, the residents were appropriately compensated for the losses they incurred, leading to the abandonment of the village.
What's most remarkable is that the submergence of the village continually fluctuates, influenced by the levels of rainfall. This dynamic process results in an ever-evolving and shifting landscape.
According to the initial Turkish census conducted in 1671, the settlement, known as Isfendil at the time, had a mere nine families. The name Sfendyli is believed to originate from the prevalent surname Sfendilos, which was common in the region during that period.
