All you need to know

Are you in Crete and looking to reach your hotel quickly? Taxis and private transfers are the perfect choice.

At every airport and port of the island, you'll find a taxi rank. You can wait in the queue that usually forms and inform the first available driver of your destination.

Taxi Fare: What to Expect for Your Journey

The fare depends mainly on the distance to your destination that the taxi has to travel. There is no additional charge for passengers or groups of up to 4 people. However, the total fare also depends on whether you have luggage with you.

When it comes to payment methods, it's advisable to carry cash as the installation of POS machines in taxis hasn't been fully implemented yet. In fact, it's ideal to have a banknote under 20 euros for short distances, as change can often be problematic.

In Crete, like the rest of Greece, taxis operate on a meter-based charging system. The initial fare, known as the flag drop, is 1.20 euros. The cost per kilometre for transfers between 5 am and midnight is 0.74 euros, while for nighttime travel or trips outside cities, it's 1.29 euros.

Extra charges apply for pickups from airports and ports, as well as for waiting times or during festive periods.

The charge is different if it is a 4- or 8-seater taxi.

Finding a Taxi in Crete: Tips and Information

As mentioned earlier, taxi ranks are available at places such as airports and ports. You'll also easily find taxis at popular attractions and central points in the major cities of Crete. Additionally, during the summer months, there are many taxis available in top tourist destinations.

To hail a taxi on the street, simply signal to the driver as they pass by. They may stop, even if they already have a passenger. Once stopped, inform the driver of your destination, and if the route aligns with their current trip, you can board the taxi. The fare remains the same; there are no discounts for travelling with additional passengers.

In less crowded areas or during nighttime, it can be extremely difficult, or even unlikely, to find a taxi circulating. Therefore, it's advisable to have the phone number of a radio taxi company handy to call for a ride. Ideally, arrangements should be made in advance to ensure transportation at your desired time and location. Otherwise, you may end up waiting for a long time or feeling disappointed.

If you require an 8-seater taxi, you probably won't find one by chance; it's advisable to book in advance.

What colour are taxis?

In Chania, the taxis are blue, in Heraklion, they are grey, and in Rethymno, they are white.

Taxis and People with Disabilities

In Crete, wheelchair-accessible taxis are not readily available, but you can contact specific companies that offer this service.

Taxis and Children

If you hail a taxi in the street or even at a taxi rank, it's not guaranteed that it will have a seat for young children. If you require one, it's advisable to inform the taxi company in advance when making a reservation by phone or online.
