On Sunday, 21 September 2025, Dromoi Zois are heading to Akrotiri, Chania, for a hike through what they call Chania’s own Agiofarago!

As the team describes it:
“We’ll descend from Gouverneto Monastery towards the Arkoudiotissa cave, the Katholiko Monastery (possibly the oldest in Crete), and the gorge of the same name — which once hosted monks and a few pirates. It leads to an incredible sea fjord. There will be a short swim for those who want, followed by an ascent to the Arkoudovounia (at 260m). From there, moving southwest of the round-headed hill, through a lush green plain, we’ll end up at Stavros — the beautiful sandy beach where Zorbas danced!”

Fit hikers, as well as beginners in VERY GOOD PHYSICAL CONDITION, can complete the full route.
Those who’d like to join but aren’t quite up for the full hike can walk up to the Arkoudiotissa cave and then return to the bus. This smaller group will enjoy an additional stop at Tsangarolon Monastery, and will also be taken to Stavros beach, the final meeting point for both groups — perfect for a swim, a meal or a coffee.

Bring swimwear (for those doing the full route) — the fjord is AMAZING!
Also bring a torch if you plan to explore the cave.

• Hike duration: 5:30 hrs | Difficulty: 1+ for the long route

• Hike duration: 1:30 hrs | Difficulty: 1 for the short route

Departure from the Saturday farmers’ market parking (Agia Anna)
at 07:00, on Sunday, 21/09/2025.

These outings take place in non-urban environments, so appropriate clothing and footwear is required.
