What better way to start the new year than with warm wishes, fresh mountain air, and a gentle hike through one of Crete’s most beautiful landscapes?
To welcome 2026, the Mountaineering Club of Heraklion invites you on an easy nature outing through the oak forest of Rouvas and the gorgeous Zaros Gorge — perfect for seasoned hikers and first-timers alike, young and old.
The adventure begins by bus from Gergeri to Selí (1,360 m), where we’ll stop for the traditional New Year’s cake cutting. From there, we descend into the lush Rouvas forest, a peaceful woodland full of ancient oaks.
We’ll make a stop at Agios Ioannis (950 m) — a magical spot with plenty of spring water, towering plane trees, and wooden benches and tables — ideal for a break.
The hike continues through the Zaros Gorge (Gafaris), before reaching our final destination: the beautiful lake of Votomos (450 m).
And to top it all off? A full Cretan lunch with gifts and great company at a local taverna.
