The 8th N.S. Art Festival, co-organised with the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Rethymno, launches on October 15, 2025 in Rethymno, presenting a Contemporary Art Exhibition themed:

“Kannavos” (as trace, space, frame, boundary, utopia...)

In this exhibition, 40 artists from Greece and Cyprus—many of them professors at Fine Arts institutions—engage in a dialogue around the concept and atmosphere of a defined and confined space. This “grid” (kannavos) carries conceptual weight, sometimes sending out a quiet SOS.

In a world where citizens are locked inside the cells of virtual reality, retreating into the suffocating boundaries of private life, the artists raise questions about the human condition in the 21st century. A time when social distancing has become a new norm and a convenient excuse.

This is a grid of limits and competitive space, where structure defines spaces of confinement or supposed freedom. Our existential compass swings between speaking out and dancing, seeking and avoiding, clashing and turning a blind eye. It recognises, and in the same moment, forgets. In the end, it gazes upon a bleeding wound, within a supposedly collaborative lab of coexistence—tailor-made, yet deeply unsettling.
