Thanasis Hatzis, View of the Night Sky from the Shepherd's Place in Anogeia
The Institute of Astrophysics of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH), with the support of the Municipality of Heraklion, is hosting two special stargazing nights dedicated to the spectacular planetary alignment currently gracing the night sky.
The event will take place on February 8 and 9, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, at the historic Venetian Walls of Heraklion, specifically in the small forest near Jesus Bastion.
Visitors will have free access to telescopes and the chance to witness a rare celestial phenomenon—the "parade" of most of the planets in our Solar System. Expect to see brilliant Jupiter, Saturn with its iconic rings, dazzling Venus shining as the Evening Star, and Mars, which will be at one of its closest approaches to Earth, a spectacle that occurs approximately every two years!
The event is supported by the Astronomy Club of Crete (S.F.A.K.), the Astronomy Student Group of the University of Crete, and local schools, including "To Pagkrition" School, the Model High School of Heraklion, and the European School of Heraklion. These groups will contribute with their own telescopes, enriching the experience for all attendees.
Open to all ages, this is a fantastic opportunity to explore celestial wonders, from the Moon and planets to distant stars—weather permitting, of course!
