Crete Commemorates the “OXI” (NO) Anniversary

News

Events to celebrate the National Anniversary of October 28, 1940 are being organised in Heraklion by the Regional Unit of Heraklion.

There will be a general display of flags starting at 8:00 AM on October 26 and lasting until sunset on October 28, including the flagging of ships docked at Heraklion port.
Public buildings, local authorities, public law institutions and banks will also be illuminated on the evenings of October 27 and 28.

Monday, October 27

  • Talks will be held at Public Services, Public Law Institutions, University of Crete, Hellenic Mediterranean University, Patriarchal Higher Ecclesiastical Academy of Crete, High Schools, Junior Highs, Primary Schools, and Technical Schools.

  • At 12:00 PM, students will lay wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Eleftherias Square.

Tuesday, October 28 – Official Programme

The church bells of Heraklion and surrounding suburbs will ring joyfully, and the Heraklion Philharmonic Band will play the traditional morning march.

Official Flag Raising Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Eleftherias Square.

10:30
Official Doxology at St. Titus Cathedral.
Attendance by dignitaries and authorities.
Marilena Papazachariaki, educator and Principal of the 44th Primary School of Heraklion, will give the commemorative speech.

11:30
Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Eleftherias Square.

  • Arrival of dignitaries and authorities

  • Memorial service

  • Wreath laying by officials

  • One minute of silence in honour of the fallen

  • National Anthem

  • End of ceremony and departure of dignitaries

Parade

The parade will begin from Demokratias Avenue (at the height of the Battle of Crete monument) and continue toward Eleftherias Square, Averof Street, and Evans Street (turning left onto the wide Evans), concluding at Kainouria Porta (Kamáres, outside the city walls – at the entrance of the Nikos Kazantzakis Garden Theatre).
